Every couple asks me some version of the same question: where does the money actually need to go? Here’s the honest breakdown, from someone who’s built hundreds of these budgets.
Splurge Here
- Photography & videography. This is the only part of the day you get to keep. Skimping here is the regret I hear about most often, years later.
- Catering & bar. Your guests will remember whether they were fed and taken care of, long after they’ve forgotten the centerpieces.
- A coordinator or production lead. The person keeping the timeline on track is what lets everyone else — including you — actually enjoy the day.
Save Here
- Stationery. Digital save-the-dates and simpler printed invitations look just as elegant for a fraction of the cost.
- Favors. Guests rarely take them home anyway. A donation in guests’ honor or a simple edible favor does the job.
- Extended florals. Statement pieces at the altar and on tables go further than covering every surface in the room.
The Line Item People Forget
Contingency. I always build 5–10% of the total budget into a buffer for the things no one plans for — a last-minute rental, an extra hour of bar service, a vendor tip that runs higher than expected. It’s the difference between a stressful week-of and a calm one.
Want a real number, not a rule of thumb? Let’s build your actual budget together.
